Various forms of flat electrical connectors have been proposed for use in making electrical connections to flat cables. One such connector is shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,977,972 to Olah et al. The connector includes a housing having an array of housing pads around the periphery of the housing and a plurality of spring clips for resiliently engaging and holding the flat cable. The leads of the flat cable are inserted into the housing and are retained in the housing by means of the spring clips. The spring clips each comprise an arcuately bent base and two legs extending in opposite directions from the base. The flat cable is inserted into the housing so that the leads are sandwiched between the legs of the clips. The distance between the base of the clip and the edge of the flat cable is established in the manufacturing process and is maintained at this distance throughout the life of the connector.
The contact between the housing and the clip is established by press-fitting the clip in the housing. The contact area of the clip is relatively small since the clip is thin, and therefore the contact between the housing and the clip is intermittent.
