So now, your company has decided to start charging for its Internet services. And not just any Internet service: it’s now charging for its Internet access. How will you make sure employees understand that you’re not charging for the free broadband connections that you’ve been offering? Will you have to start thinking about security?
All of these are very important issues. And so are some other things, like how your employees will access the Internet and what happens if they’re going to be using company resources to access the Internet while doing private business. But the biggest issue is what your employees will do when they’re on the Internet. You can take many different approaches. But there are some things you should be aware of if you’re thinking about charging for Internet access in your company.
First, what happens to employees’ data on the Internet? Employees have to know they can trust you not to go through their email, to go through their personal files or to use their web browser to access your site and do something they shouldn’t be doing. The simplest way to approach this is to have a policy stating that employees are not allowed to use company resources for personal business. If your business is large enough, this might make sense for the top executives and maybe the entire C-suite; for small companies, you’re probably better off just making it company policy.
What about employee use of personal email? This is a big deal, and you have to make sure your policy is clear and that the consequences of using personal email are well understood. If your company is like most, it has a policy in place stating that employees are not to use company email for anything personal. But that policy probably wasn’t developed with security in mind, so you have to make sure your policy is clear and enforced. A company-wide agreement on the consequences of using personal email, and a firm policy on the enforcement of that policy, can help.
